A Unique Reading Experience
The Oneworld Classics list will include the greatest masterpieces of all time, from every literature and genre, but will also try to redefine and expand the classics canon by promoting unjustly neglected works of enduring significance.
All the titles in the series are provided with an extensive critical apparatus – including illustrations, a section on the life and works of the author, quotes, anecdotes and extra material, in order to offer our readers a unique classics reading experience. Some of the titles also include an interview with a distinguished contemporary writer or commentator.
In a market now seemingly clogged with classics imprints, you can be assured that with the Oneworld Classics list you will be getting the very best available: the definitive text, authoritative and extensive appendices, beautifully designed paperback boards complete with flaps and environmentally sound acid-free paper.
Production Quality
Our books are made to last, so they are printed on acid-free paper which won’t yellow by the time you finish reading them... With its French flaps and individually designed inside covers, our paperback series is a collector’s and book lover’s delight.
Illustrations
Each volume contains eight black-and-white plates with illustrations relating to the author’s life and works. These enable the reader to “see” rather than just read the text. Illustrations may include pictures of the author, reproductions of autograph documents and title pages, portraits of important characters in the book, photographs of the author’s residence, maps and other relevant visual material.
Critical Apparatus, Notes and Extra Material
Each volume will include a comprehensive critical apparatus covering the personal and historical circumstances that shaped the author’s work, enriched by anecdotes and excerpts from letters, documents and works, to help the reader place the authors and their works in a social and historical context. The author’s works are presented in chronological order, accompanied by a brief description and commentary, with longer sections dedicated to the major works and to the title in question. The apparatus is complemented by extensive textual notes and a wealth of extra reading material, including a select bibliography, a list of imitations, parodies and adaptations inspired by the work, an appendix containing further texts – such as relevant letters, documents or works by the author – and, for translations, a few pages from the original.
